Buddy, Can You Spare Some Experience?
If you’re between jobs, trying to transition into marketing from another line of business, or looking to beef up your resume, consider volunteering your time. That’s not a typo – I meant it: volunteer. You can get ah-MAZE-ing experience volunteering for a social or professional organization. Learn new skills. Meet new people.
Check out local organizations like the Chicago AMA, the BMA, CIMA, CADM… professional organizations are always looking for willing donors of time and talent.
Or consider something that aligns with your personal beliefs. Fight world hunger in your own backyard. Tackle homelessness. Women’s rights. Gay rights. Go green. Get religion. Armed with little more than awareness of your own interests and a local Google search, you’re likely to find an organization that would heartily welcome your pro bono marketing, pr or communications support. Get inspired at Chicago Cares.
The best part about volunteering is it feels good. There’s no better way to cure the career blues than to make a difference in someone else’s life.
So true. I'm a huge advocate for doing something for others when you are in need yourself. Volunteering immediately gets you out of your own you-know-what and gets you thinking about others, which tends to bring all kinds of good your way. It's the basic Pay It Forward model at its best and it works. Check out the Taproot Foundation for marketing related volunteer opps too! http://www.taprootfoundation.org/
